Summer is on its way, and we know what that means – garden parties galore! It is time to show off your hosting skills, however, if you are looking to improve your skillset and move away from your standard BBQ cooking, a pizza oven might be the next best addition to your patio.

We have recently tested the Ooni Koda 16 pizza oven which is one of their best-sellers and we are going to provide you with all the information needed so that you can decide if this is the best pizza oven for you.

Pizza in less than 60 seconds

Yes, you read that correct! Once you have heated up your Koda 16 (which takes roughly 20 minutes) you can be serving your tasty Neapolitan or Meat Feast pizza to your guests in less than a minute. The key here is to ensure that you have the right heat to guarantee that your pizza crust is crunchy, with slight charring on the outside and that the middle of the pizza is soft and light on the inside. And this will take just 60 seconds with the right heat setting.

To ensure we could write a decent Ooni Koda 16 review we needed to see for ourselves if all the other reviews were correct and that this is one of the best pizza ovens on the market. So, with our tastebuds raring to go we decided to cook a Neapolitan pizza hoping that we could somehow replicate the local authentic pizzas we have tried whilst on our travels in Italy.

Well, let us tell you that we were not disappointed. In fact, we wouldn’t have known the difference if this was cooked in a wood-fired pizza oven. The look, taste and texture of the pizza was spot on! The oven gets really hot and reaches 800°F in 20 minutes which is the same temperature that you would bake a pizza in a wood-fired oven so no wonder we couldn’t tell the difference.

Pre-Heating and Temperature

Ooni makes a statement on their website that the oven can reach up to 950°F. however, we were not able to reach this temperature when we tested the oven. We managed 800°F in 20 minutes which is fine and, as mentioned, is a similar temperature to what a wood-fired oven reaches.

We prepared our pizza during the heating of the oven, so as soon as we had reached the correct temperature, the pizza was straight into the fire. 20 minutes is much faster than a wood-fired alternative so that was great.

Some Ooni Koda 16 reviews have stated that they found placing the pizza in the center of the oven produced the best results, however, our testing found that it was best placed near the back left corner.

The temperature control settings are a breeze to use. The oven allows you to adjust the burner flame via a dial. This allows you to have full control over the oven’s temperature. Therefore, you can bake any Neapolitan-style pizza quickly at hot temperatures, or if you prefer a New-York style pizza, you can cook this at a lower temperature for longer.

A Good-Sized Oven for the Larger Pizza

The official size of the oven is 16.5 x 16.5 inches (42 x 42 cm). This should provide a cooking surface perfect for a 16-inch pizza. If you are looking to cook smaller 10–12-inch pizzas, then the oven still works perfectly. We did find that the cooking surface was a bit tight for the 16-inch pizza and needed to be turned half way through, but smaller pizzas cooked fine without the need to turn and had a perfectly even bake. You may also find that it takes a bit of getting used to cooking a 16-inch pizza perfectly in this oven. One of the main complaints is the tightness of the cooking surface and that newbies to these ovens have often burnt the pizza on their first attempts. Don’t worry if you do, we did too! But our 2nd attempt was much better.

Setting it up. Big and Roomy – Yet Portable

What we love about this pizza oven is the fact it is big and roomy inside, yet it is completely portable. This means that you can move it around easily to find your perfect cooking space.

The oven requires very little effort to set up. It is tripod based meaning it has two legs at the front and one at the back which fold out smoothly from underneath. All legs include a slip-resistant material on the bottom that ensures the oven stays securely in place.

Once we had set the Koda 16 on top of our table all we needed to do to get the oven up and running was to hook up the gas regulator hose to our propane tank. The manual recommends that once you have connected the gas securely that you test with a soap and water solution to make sure that there are no leaks present.

We followed the manuals recommendations and lit the oven and ran for around 30 minutes at its highest temperature. Getting the oven alight is very simple; you just need to push and turn the ignition button to the left and hold it in for a couple of seconds. Our oven connected right away, and the flames roared up instantly.

All-in-all it took us less than 10 minutes to set up.

Let’s move on to the most important part of this Ooni Koda 16 review – The price!

Direct from the Ooni website the Koda 16 retails at $599. Although not cheap, we found this to be a reasonable price when looking at competitors in the market. It is also much cheaper than a wood-fired alternative and of course, much more portable. It is recommended to always purchase direct from Ooni as this ensures that you get a genuine parts warranty.

Ooni Koda 16 Review – Our Verdict

In all honesty, we were really impressed with the Ooni Koda 16 pizza oven. It really does make an awesome pizza that will keep your guests coming back for more. The fact that it can cook such an amazing pizza in just 60 seconds is un-matched in this area.

The Koda 16 is priced about right, but you can always go for the Koda 12 as this particular oven is more budget-friendly.
